LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Virginia Tech lost to Colorado State, 88-52, in the championship game of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic on Sunday night in the Orleans Arena. With the loss, Tech falls to 9-3 overall, while the Rams improve to 10-2 on the season.

The Hokies were able to keep the game close through most of the first half and Erick Green hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the CSU lead to 33-27. But the Rams opened the second half on a 21-4 run and never trailed after the intermission.

Green, who the night before had taken over the NCAA Division I lead in points per game, led the Hokies with 26 points. Jarell Eddie was the only other Virginia Tech player in double-figures with 10 points.

Green was named to all-tournament team. He scored a tournament-high 57 points. With his 26 points, he ties the school-record for most consecutive games scoring 20-or-more points at 12 games. Bob Ayersman is the only other Hokie to achieve that feat, which he did in the 1958-59 season. Both Green and Ayersman opened their respective seasons with their streaks.

The Rams out rebounded the Hokies, 45-32, and forced Tech into 15 turnovers in the contest. CSU also outshot Tech, 47.6 percent to 35.8 percent and also made 11 of 24 shots from three-point range. CSU scored 26 points in the paint and 21 points off of Virginia Tech turnovers.

The Hokies will wrap up non-conference play next Saturday, as they travel to Salt Lake City to face the BYU Cougars on Dec. 29. The game will tip-off at 2 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, or noon in Salt Lake City. The contest, to be broadcast by ESPNU, will be played at Energy Solutions Arena, home of the Utah Jazz of the NBA.
