LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Virginia Tech fought back from a 13-point first half deficit and defeated Bradley, 66-65, in overtime in the semifinal of the 2012 Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic in the Orleans Arena on Saturday night.
Tech, now 9-2 on the season, trailed the Braves, 35-25, at the intermission, but Tech roared back and took a 55-53 lead with 2:03 remaining in regulation on a lay-up by Erick Green. Walt Lemon, Jr., hit a lay-up with nine seconds remaining to tie the game at 55-55 for Bradley, now 8-3 overall. Green got a good look at a final shot, but missed and the game went into overtime.
In the extra session, the Hokies fell behind 65-60 with 49 seconds remaining, but Tech forced some turnovers and got the score to 65-64 with 26 seconds remaining on a lay-up and free throw by Green. Tech then forced another BU turnover and Green made yet another lay-up with 21 seconds to play and Tech held off several Bradley threats and sealed the win on a defensive rebound by Robert Brown.
Green led all scorers with career-highs of 31 points and eight rebounds. Cadarian Raines tied his career-high of 16 points and added nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Jarell Eddie scored 12 points in the win. Dyricus Simms-Edwards led the Braves with 15 points and Tyshon Pickett and Jordan Prosser added 10 points each.
The Hokies outshot BU, 41.1 percent to 36.5 percent and out rebounded the Braves, 43-36. Tech held Bradley to just 25.9 percent from the field in the second half.
The Hokies, who played their first game without injured forward Marshall Wood, were bolstered by the play of sophomore walk-on Christian Beyer, who played a career-high 27 minutes and also recorded career-highs of three points, nine rebounds and two steals.
Tech will have little time to rest up, as they will play Colorado State in the championship game of the tournament on Sunday night. The game will begin at 8:30 p.m., PST, or 11:30 p.m., eastern standard time. The CBS Sports Network will televise the game live.
