BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Orange squad defeated the Maroon team, 75-71, in Virginia Tech Men’s Basketball’s Orange & Maroon Scrimmage, held Sunday afternoon in Cassell Coliseum.
Senior guard Erick Green led all scorers with 22 points, plus he dished out six assists to lead the Orange team. Sophomore forward C.J. Barksdale had 16 points and 11 rebounds, junior wing Jarell Eddie added 15 points and 13 rebounds and sophomore guard Adam Smith added 14 points for the Orange. Sophomore forward Christian Beyer scored eight points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while both Eddie and Barksdale each had five assists in the win.
Redshirt junior post player Cadarian Raines scored 20 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and also blocked four shots for the Maroon team. Freshman forward Marshall Wood also had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds and sophomore wing Robert Brown also scored 18 points for the Maroon team.
The Orange team outrebounded the Maroon, 50-40, although the Maroon outshot the Orange, 42.9 percent to 36.8 percent. Both team recorded more assists than turnovers.
This was the Hokies’ first public appearance under new head coach James Johnson. Tech will open the season on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m., as the Hokies will face East Tennessee State in Cassell Coliseum. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
