BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech head men’s basketball coach James Johnson has announced that Adam Smith has transferred to Virginia Tech. Smith will have three seasons of eligibility beginning with the 2013-14 season.

“We are extremely excited to have Adam join our program,” Johnson said. “He had his best games against the best teams. Obviously, he played well against ACC opponents. He is a guy that can score the basketball in a lot of different ways. He is an excellent student who is going to be a great asset to our team.”

Smith, a guard from Jonesboro, Ga., played his freshman season at UNC Wilmington. At Wilmington, Smith appeared in all 31 games and started 29 times. He was second on the team in scoring, averaging 13.7 points per game and led the team in 3-point field goals with 58. He shot 33.1 percent from 3-point range and 81.2 percent from the free-throw line.

Smith led the Seahawks in scoring in nine games, including 32 points in a loss at Wake Forest and 23 points in a loss at Maryland. His 32 points in the Wake Forest game was a season high for both Smith and the Seahawks.

Smith played his high school basketball at Fayette County High School. At FCHS, he averaged 26.2 points, 3.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game as a senior. He led the Tigers to a 30-3 record in his senior season and scored 16 points and dished out six assists in a 66-64 loss in the AAAA state semifinals. He scored 50 points vs. Upson-Lee in an 84-25 victory.

He holds the career scoring record at Fayette County and was named second-team Parade All-American as a senior. He was the only Georgia player selected to Parade squad. He averaged 25.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.0 steals per game as a junior. As a senior, he was named first-team all-state by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and was selected the AJC’s Southside Player of the Year. In the summers, he played for Georgia Impact AAU club team.
