Eddie named to 2011-12 All-ACC Academic Men's Basketball Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech’s Jarell Eddie joins a pair of four-time All-ACC Academic team selections – North Carolina’s Tyler Zeller and Clemson’s Tanner Smith – and Duke’s Mason Plumlee, who along with Zeller, is a first team CoSIDA Academic All-America selection, on the 2012 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men’s Basketball team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

Eddie makes the team for the first time. The sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., is third on the team in scoring (9.5 points per game) and is shooting 45.1 percent from three-point range.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.

Zeller was also chosen as the recipient of the CoSIDA Academic All-America of the Year award for men’s basketball. The 7-foot senior from Washington, Ind., currently ranks third in the ACC in rebounding (9.3), fifth in scoring (16.2) and second in field goal percentage (.540).

Smith, a three-year starter for the Tigers, is second on the team in scoring (11.2) and assists (4.1), third in rebounds (5.2) and has 966 career points. In 28 starts for the fourth-ranked Blue Devils, Plumlee has 14 games with 10 or more rebounds and is second in the ACC in rebounding (9.4) and seventh in blocked shots (1.5).

Florida State’s Luke Loucks, fourth in the ACC in assists (4.0) has been chosen to the Academic honors team for the third time. Clemson’s Andre Young, the Tigers’ leading scorer (13.2) and the ACC’s current career leader in 3-point field goals with 231, and Plumlee each earned a spot on the All-Academic team for the second time in their respective careers.

Clemson led all schools with four selections, while Duke and Georgia Tech had two each. Florida State, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest were each represented by one player.
