CLEMSON, S.C. – Virginia Tech rallied from an eight-point second-half deficit to tie the game on two occasions with under four minutes to play, but the Hokies couldn’t get over the hump, falling 58-56 to Clemson in an ACC game played Thursday night at Littlejohn Coliseum.
With the loss, the Hokies fell to 15-15 overall on the season, 4-11 in the ACC. Eight of Tech’s 11 ACC losses have been by five points or less.
Clemson, which has won five of its past six ACC games, moved to 16-13 overall, 8-7 in league play. The Tigers avenged a 67-65 loss to the Hokies in Blacksburg on Feb. 4.
Clemson took a 58-56 lead on two free throws by Tanner Smith with 2:45 left in the game. Tech had four chances to tie the game or take the lead, but couldn’t convert, coming up empty on its final four possessions of the game.
Clemson’s Andre Young was whistled for a push off with 11.7 seconds remaining, giving the Hokies a final opportunity. Following a timeout with 7.5 seconds to go, Tech’s Erick Green drove the lane and delivered a nice pass to Cadarian Raines, who was fouled with 2.2 seconds left.
Raines missed the first attempt, and after a Clemson timeout, he intentionally missed the second one. But Smith got the rebound and held on to the ball as time expired.
Jarell Eddie paced the Hokies with 15 points, hitting 5 of 10 from the floor, including 3 of 6 from beyond the 3-point arc. Raines added 12 points and eight rebounds, and Dorenzo Hudson finished with 11 points.
Green scored just eight points, which snapped his string of double-figure scoring performances at 30 games.
Smith scored 14 points for the Tigers, while Young added 10. Devin Booker scored 11.
Tech closes out the regular season with a home game on Sunday against N.C. State. Tipoff for the game is slated for 6 p.m.
