CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Virginia Tech’s late rally fell short and the Hokies lost to Boston College, 61-59, in the Conte Forum on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops Tech to 11-6 overall and 0-3 in the ACC, while Boston College improves to 7-10 overall and 2-1 in league play.

The Hokies played the game without leading scorer Erick Green, who sprained the lateral collateral ligament in his left knee in practice on Thursday afternoon and was not able to play. Green leads the Hokies in scoring, assists, steals and minutes played this season. Freshman Marquis Rankin got the start in place of Green.

The game was close throughout the first half, and BC took a 29-27 lead into intermission. The Eagles were able to extend the lead to as many as 11 points with 4:34 remaining in the game, but the Hokies hit four, three-point baskets in the closing minutes and cut the BC lead to 61-59 on a three-pointer by Jarell Eddie with less than one second remaining. Tech stole the inbounds pass, but was not able to get off a shot before the buzzer sounded and BC took the victory.

Virginia Tech’s two seniors led the way for Tech, as Victor Davila scored 14 points and Dorenzo Hudson added 13 points in the loss. Dennis Clifford led BC with 15 points. Tech won the battle on the boards, out rebounding BC, 30-28, but shot 36.2 percent from the field.

The Hokies return to action on Thursday night, as they host nationally-ranked North Carolina at 9 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum. The game will be televised by ESPN.
