STILLWATER, Okla. – Virginia Tech defeated Oklahoma State, 67-61, in Gallagher-Iba Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Hokies are now 11-3 overall, while OSU falls to 7-6 on the season.
The Hokies jumped out to an eight-point lead early in the first half and took a 28-23 lead into the intermission. The Cowboys opened in the second half on a 19-9 run and led 44-37 with 13:03 remaining. Tech then went on a 19-3 run over the next seven minutes and took a 56-47 lead on a lay-up by Robert Brown with 6:18 remaining to play.
OSU fought back and tied the game, 61-61 with 2:02 to play. Virginia Tech did not allow the Pokes to score for the remainder of the contest. Tech scored its final field goal of the game with 5:43 remaining, a jumper by Brown, but made all seven of their free throw attempts down the stretch to secure the win.
Dorenzo Hudson led the Hokies with 18 points and Erick Green added 16 points in the win. With his 18 points, Hudson reached the 1,000-career points mark at Virginia Tech. He now has 1,006 points as a Hokie. Dorian Finney-Smith grabbed 10 rebounds and Jarell Eddie added nine points and seven rebounds. Keiton Page led all scorers with 21 points and Brian Williams added 14 points in the loss for OSU.
One major key in the game for the Hokies was rebounding. Tech out rebounded OSU, 47-34, including 18-6 on the offensive glass. This was the second meeting of the season between the two schools, as Tech defeated OSU, 59-57, in Madison Square Garden on Nov. 25, to claim third place in the NIT Season Tip-Off. Tech out rebounded the Cowboys by 22 boards in the first meeting. Tech made 15 of 17 from the free throw line in the game, including 13 of 15 after intermission. The Hokies scored 24 points on second-chance opportunities.
The Hokies return to action on Saturday, Jan. 7, as they travel to Winston-Salem to open ACC play against Wake Forest. The game will tip-off at noon in Joel Coliseum and will be televised live by the ACC Network.
