BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech opened the second half with a 15-0 run to break open a close game and roll past Campbell 85-60 in a non-conference game played Saturday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum.
With the win, Tech moved to 8-3 overall on the season and won its third straight game. Campbell fell to 8-3.
The Hokies led just 32-29 at halftime after shooting only 37 percent from the floor. But Tech opened the second half by hitting six of its first seven shots, as Jarell Eddie heated up following a scoreless first half. Eddie scored seven of Tech’s 15 points in that run, and his basket with 15:19 left in the game capped the run, giving the Hokies a 47-29 lead.
“We came out [the second half] and really wanted to put those guys away,” Eddie said. “We defended a lot better. That helped us offensively. We were able to get out and run.
“Things just came to me more in the second half. I was just making plays, making basketball plays. I was able to finish.”
Tech continued its hot shooting throughout the second half. The Hokies shot 73.1 percent in the final 20 minutes and 54.7 percent for the game – its second-best shooting performance of the season.
In contrast, Campbell struggled from the floor in the first five minutes of the second half. The Fighting Camels missed three shots and turned the ball over four times on their first seven possessions of the second half. Their first basket in the final 20 minutes came at the 14:46 mark, and Campbell shot just 41.9 percent in the second half (44.1 for the game).
“They [Campbell] run good motion,” Tech head coach Seth Greenberg said. “I thought the second half we were in the right place with a purpose. We were in the right place with an edge. We pressured the ball a little more, and we talked. We were a little more alert. We wanted to keep the ball in front of us and contest shots.”
Dorenzo Hudson and Victor Davila both snapped shooting slumps for Tech, leading the Hokies in scoring with 15 points each. Hudson hit 5 of 11 from the floor, including 2 of 4 from beyond the 3-point arc.
“It’s very nice to have a game like this,” Hudson said. “I’ve been struggling, having a shooting slump or whatever you want to call it the last couple of games or so. It feels good to come out here and give the team a lift.”
“Dorenzo shot the ball,” Greenberg said. “He stepped into his shots. He attacked the basket. More importantly, he gave us energy. He led. I think he’s been afraid to lead the past few weeks because he had so much on his plate.”
Davila hit 6 of 9 from the floor and scored all 15 of his points in the second half.
“We got Victor the ball tighter, and he was more active,” Greenberg said. “We put him in position to score. He was in foul trouble the first half.”
Erick Green added 12 points, while Eddie finished with 11 and Dorian Finney-Smith had 10.
Trey Freeman led Campbell with 16 points, while Eric Griffin had 15.
The Hokies continue non-conference action on Monday night when they take on North Florida. Tip-off for the game is slated for 7 p.m.
