KINGSTON, R.I. – Virginia Tech defeated the University of Rhode Island, 78-67, in basketball action Wednesday night in the Ryan Center on the URI campus. The Hokies improve to 6-3 on the season, while URI falls to 1-8 overall.
Tech shot 54.5 percent from the field for the game, including 65.4 percent in the second half. The Hokies made 11 of their 13 free throw attempts and were good on seven of 16 three-point attempts.
The Hokies fell behind early, 7-0, but took a 28-27 lead into the intermission. Tech fell behind once again the open the second half, but went on a 33-20 run in the middle of the second period, taking a 61-51 lead with 5:33 remaining on a three-pointer by Jarell Eddie. Tech stretched the lead to as many 12 points before claiming the 78-67 victory.
Erick Green, who did not start due to a coach’s decision, came off the bench to score 24 points to lead all scores. Tech had four players in double figures, including 15 points by Eddie and a career-high 12 points by Cadarian Raines. Dorian Finney-Smith added 11 points for the Hokies. Nikola Malesevic scored 23 points to lead the Rams.
With Green and Raines’ big nights, the Hokie bench outscored URI’s substitutes, 44-8. Tech out rebounded the Rams, 33-29.
The Hokies, who ended first semester classes on Wednesday, will take a break from semester exams on Sunday afternoon, as they host Norfolk State at 4 p.m., in Cassell Coliseum. The game will be shown on ESPN3.
