MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Virginia Tech fell to Minnesota, 58-55, in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in Williams Arena on Wednesday night. Tech is now 5-2 on the season, while Minnesota improves to 7-1 overall.
Tech fell behind early, but fought back and took a 28-25 lead into intermission. The Hokies and Golden Gophers battled back and forth throughout the second half, before Minnesota took a 56-55 lead with 18 seconds remaining on a pair of free throws by Julian Welch. Welch made two more free throws with 6.4 seconds remaining to give the Golden Gophers the lead, 58-56. Erick Green, who had been knocked off the elevated court in William Arena in the final half minute of action, attempted to hit a game tying three-pointer at the buzzer, but the ball spun off the rim and Minnesota claimed the victory.
Green scored a career-high 25 points to lead all scorers. Robert Brown added 13 points and Victor Davila scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Welch led the Golden Gophers with 15 points. Green made four of eight from three-point range and handed-out a team-high four assists without committing a turnover. He suffered a bruised shoulder on the fall, but was able to return in the final seconds of play.
Tech out rebounded Minnesota, 32-30, but shot just 37.7 percent from the floor. The Hokies made all seven free throw attempts, but just two came in the second half.
The Hokies return to action on Sunday afternoon, as they host Kansas State at 5:30 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum. The Big Ten won the Challenge for the third consecutive season.
