Hokies fall to #5 Syracuse, 69-58

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Virginia Tech lost to No. 5 Syracuse, 69-58, in the semifinal of the 2011 NIT Season-Tip-Off Wednesday night in Madison Square Garden. The Hokies suffer their first loss of the season and fall to 3-1, while Syracuse improves to 5-0.

The Hokies took a 29-27 lead into intermission, shooting 47.8 percent from the field. Tech jumped out to a 20-13 lead with 8:08 remaining in the first half on a jumper by Jarell Eddie.

Following the break, the Hokies were able to keep the game close and held took a 42-39 lead with 13:28 remaining on a dunk by Victor Davila. Syracuse would then go on a 17-3 run over the next five plus minutes to secure the lead for contest.

Eddie tied a career-high with 17 points and set a new career-high with five assists. He made six of 14 field goal attempts, including two of six three-pointer. Erick Green added 14 points and three steals and Dorenzo Hudson scored 13 points for the Hokies. Kris Joseph led the Orange with 20 points and 10 rebounds and C.J. Fair had 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for SU.

Tech shot 42.6 percent from the floor for the game, including 42.1 percent from three-point range. SU outrebounded Tech, 32-27, but the Orange forced Tech into 16 turnovers.

The Hokies return to action in the third place game of the tournament on Friday afternoon. Tech will play Oklahoma State at 2:30 p.m. in Madison Square Garden on either ESPN or ESPN2. Check back with hokiesports.com for a network update.
