CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s basketball team was predicted to finish sixth in the 2011-12 ACC basketball standings in voting by media members at the league’s annual Operation Basketball on Wednesday in Charlotte.
North Carolina was selected first in the poll, garnering 57 of the possible 59 first place votes and 706 total points. Duke was selected second, with the other two first place votes and 649 points, Florida State was third with 560 points, Virginia was selected fourth with 463 points and Miami was selected fifth with 455 points, 44 points ahead of the Hokies. Clemson was picked seventh, followed by NC State in eighth and Maryland in ninth place. Georgia Tech was selected 10th, Wake Forest was picked 11th and Boston College rounded out the selections.
Harrison Barnes of North Carolina was selected as the preseason Player of the Year and Austin Rivers of Duke was the preseason selection as Freshman of the Year. Barnes joins teammates John Henson and Tyler Zeller, along with Miami’s Malcolm Grant, Seth Curry of Duke and Mike Scott of Virginia on the preseason all-conference team.
The Hokies open the 2011-12 season at home against East Tennessee State on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.
