BLACKSBURG, Va. – Due to a favorable ruling by the NCAA staff, Virginia Tech men’s basketball player Jarell Eddie has regained his eligibility and is able to compete immediately.
Eddie was granted relief by the NCAA staff on behalf of the Progress-Towards-Degree Waiver Committee on the strength of his exemplary academic record since arriving at Virginia Tech in the Summer of 2010. Eddie, a sophomore forward from Charlotte, N.C., was suspended from the team on March 9, 2011, due to a violation of athletics department rules.
“I am excited and appreciative that the committee has ruled in Jarell’s favor,” head coach Seth Greenberg said. “Jarell is an outstanding young man and a terrific student-athlete. He is excited about being back with our team and looks forward to contributing to our success this season.”
Eddie averaged 2.9 points and 2.2 rebounds per game last season as a freshman for the Hokies, appearing in 27 games. He averaged 10.9 minutes per game in the 2010-11 season.
The Hokies begin practice on Oct. 14 and will open the 2011-12 season on Nov. 12 against East Tennessee State in Cassell Coliseum at 2 p.m.
