WINDSOR, ONT. – Virginia Tech won the second of its two games on an exhibition swing through Canada on Thursday morning. The Hokies downed the University of Windsor, 79-63, at the St. Denis Centre to conclude the trip.
The game was close through the 10 minutes of action, before Tech went on a 22-11 run to take a 10-point lead on a put back by freshman forward C.J. Barksdale with 1:36 remaining in the first half. Tech led by as many as 11 points in the first half, before taking a 38-29 lead into the locker room.
As was the case on Wednesday night, the Hokies used a hot shooting performance in the second half to secure the win. Tech was 17 of 26 from the field following intermission, good for 65.4 percent. Tech shot 54.5 percent from the floor for the contest.
Tech led by as many as 20 points in the second half, when junior guard Erick Green hit a shot to cap off a 6-0 run and pushed Tech’s advantage to 59-39. Tech did not have the services of senior forward JT Thompson, who was held out of the game for precautionary reasons with soreness in his surgically repaired left knee.
Four Hokies scored in double figures in the contest, led by Barksdale with 18 points and six rebounds. Barksdale was eight for 10 from the free throw line and recorded a pair of steals.
Junior guard Erick Green added 12 points, a game-high six assists and four steals and freshman forward Dorian Finney-Smith scored 11 points and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. Senior forward Victor Davila added 10 points and six rebounds for the Hokies. Josh Collins had 25 points and Enrico Di Loreto added 14 points for the Lancers.
The Hokies will return to Blacksburg Thursday night. Fall semester classes begin for Virginia Tech on Monday, August 22.
