WINDSOR, ONT. – Virginia Tech opened the 2011 exhibition schedule with a 73-61 victory over the University of Windsor Wednesday night at the St. Denis Centre in Windsor.
Junior guard Erick Green and freshman forward Dorian Finney-Smith led the Hokies with 15 points each. Finney-Smith also grabbed eight rebounds and led the team with four assists. He was five of seven from the field, including two of three from three-point range. Green had a team-high four steals in the game.
Redshirt sophomore forward Cadarian Raines added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Hokies. Raines made six of nine shots from the field. Freshmen Robert Brown and C.J. Barksdale had six point each for Tech.
The Hokies took a 27-25 lead into the intermission and had a 14-0 run midway through the first half. Tech really turned up the offense in the second half, as the Hokies made 20 of 33 shots from the field in the second period, shooting 60.6 percent after the break.
Tech shot 44.9 percent from the field and 23.5 percent from three-point range for the game. The Hokies outrebounded the Lancers, 39-27, including a 16-5 advantage on the offensive glass. Tech forced Windsor into 18 turnovers in the game. The Hokies played all 11 players that made the trip to Canada.
The Hokies will conclude this exhibition trip to Canada on Thursday morning, as they will once again face the University of Windsor at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Denis Centre.
