BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech Head Men’s Basketball Coach Seth Greenberg has announced that James Johnson has been promoted to the position of Associate Head Men’s Basketball Coach for the Hokies.
“James Johnson is one of the elite assistant coaches in all of college basketball,” Greenberg said. “His attention to detail, his commitment to the development of the student-athlete and his ability to communicate are second to none. He is a relentless recruiter, a tireless worker and an ‘old-school’ basketball guy. This is a title that is well-deserved.”
Johnson recently completed his fourth season as an assistant coach with the Hokies. Since joining the Tech staff, the Hokies have compiled an 87-50 overall record and have received two first-round byes in the ACC Tournament over that stretch. The Hokies have made the post-season in each of his four seasons in Blacksburg. This season, he was named as one of the top 50 assistants by Clark Francis of Hoop Scoop for Basketball Times.
He joined the Hokies following two seasons as an assistant at George Mason. He also worked as an assistant coach at Penn State, College of Charleston, Longwood and Ferrum, as well as one season at Hargrave Military Academy.
Johnson, a native of Powhatan, Va., was a four-year player and three-year starter at Ferrum College. A three-time Defensive Player of the Year, he helped guide his team to two conference championships and a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. He was also voted his team’s Most Valuable Player in 1993. In 2001, Johnson was selected as one of the top 10 players in Ferrum basketball history. In September of 2009, Johnson was inducted into the Ferrum College Athletic Hall of Fame. Johnson is a member of the Black Coaches Association (BCA) and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).
