BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech scored the first four points of the game, but Boston College answered with a 19-2 run and never looked back, knocking off the Hokies 76-61 on Senior Night at Cassell Coliseum.
With the loss, Tech dropped to 19-9 overall, 9-6 in the ACC. BC, which swept the season series from Tech, improved to 18-11 overall, 8-7 in the league.
The Hokies were done in by cold shooting, especially beyond the 3-point arc (3 for 17), and got pounded 38-24 on the boards. Particularly bothersome to Tech coach Seth Greenberg was the Hokies’ defense, which allowed BC to shoot 45.1 percent from the floor and hit 10 3-pointers.
“I’m embarrassed,” Greenberg said. “That’s the only way I can describe that. Yesterday, we had an absolutely phenomenal practice. Today, I looked in their eyes at shoot-around and we got what I saw. I challenged them at the end of shoot-around. I challenged them before the game. I don’t know if it’s their emotional tank is on empty, but that’s a sorry excuse. That’s a sorry, sorry, sorry excuse.”
The Hokies trailed by as many as 18 in the first half, but managed to slice the lead to eight at the break. In the second half, Malcolm Delaney nailed a 3-pointer to open the half to cut the lead to five, 35-30, but BC’s John Cahill answered with a 3-pointer and the Hokies got no closer than five points the rest of the second half.
Tech trailed 45-39 after a Jeff Allen basket with 16:16 remaining and had chance to cut into the lead further, but came up empty on back-to-back possessions after getting defensive stops. The Hokies scored just one basket over the next seven minutes after Allen’s bucket, allowing the Eagles to pull away.
BC led by as many as 20 in the second half – the Hokies’ largest deficit this season.
“It’s simple,” Tech guard Erick Green said. “We didn’t come to play. We got embarrassed. I feel bad for the seniors because that’s not how you want to go out. But hands down, we got outplayed. They got ahead too quick, and we tried to ramp it up. But they just beat us.”
Green paced the Hokies with 21 points, hitting 9 of 17 from the floor. Delaney added 17 points, while Jeff Allen finished with 14.
Reggie Jackson scored 20 points to lead BC – 13 coming in the first seven minutes of the game. Corey Raji added 19 points and 12 rebounds, and Cahill scored a career-high 12.
Tech will look to right the ship when it plays its final regular-season game this Saturday at Clemson. Tip-off for the game is slated for noon.
