CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Malcolm Delaney scored 22 points for Virginia Tech, but in-state rival Virginia drained 11 3-pointers and went on to knock off the Hokies 61-54 in an ACC game played Saturday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena.
With the loss, Tech fell to 17-8 overall, 7-5 in the ACC. Virginia, which had lost three straight and five of six, moved to 13-13, 3-8 in the league. The Cavaliers swept the season series from Tech.
“You’ve got to give them credit,” Tech coach Seth Greenberg said. “They ran the clock down, and they made big shots. I always say it’s a make-and-miss game, and that game was a pretty good example. They wanted us to guard for 30 seconds, and most of the time, we did a good job the first 28 or so. But they made a bunch of shots at the end of the shot clock, and you’ve got to give them credit for that.
“We don’t play that way. We want to play faster. Everyone has a playing philosophy and style, and it worked for them tonight.”
The Hokies trailed by as many as 15 points in the second half, but a 13-1 run got them back in the game. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Delaney, the second coming with 7:45 left in the game, pulled Tech to within 45-42. But Mustapha Farrakhan hit a 3-pointer just 23 seconds later to give UVa a 48-42 lead and stop the bleeding.
The Hokies got no closer than four the rest of the game. Delaney hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the final 30 seconds, with the second coming with 18.5 seconds remaining that made the score 56-52.
But UVa’s Joe Harris hit two free throws with 17.5 seconds left, and then Farrakhan hit 3 of 4 from the line in the final 11 seconds to preserve the win for the Cavaliers.
“It’s tough, just like any other loss,” Delaney said. “They hit a couple of wide-open shots [3-pointers], but they hit a lot at the end of the shot clock that were contested. We played good defense for most possessions. They just hit tough shots. We can’t take that away from them."
Delaney connected on just 8 of 22 from the floor – as a team, Tech shot just 40.4 percent – but he hit six 3-pointers. Erick Green added 12 points, and Jeff Allen continued his double-double streak for the Hokies. A stick-back with 4.2 seconds to go gave him 11 points and 15 rebounds. That marked his seventh consecutive double-double and 13th of the season.
Farrakhan led Virginia with 16 points, while Harris finished with 15 and Sammy Zeglinski had 10.
The Hokies head to Winston-Salem, N.C., for their next game. Tech takes on Wake Forest on Tuesday night in a game slated to tip off at 7 p.m.
