ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Virginia Tech made two key defensive stops in the waning moments of the extra period and defeated St. Bonaventure, 76-68, in overtime Thursday night at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, N.Y.
The Hokies, now 7-4 on the season and winners of three straight games, led by as many as 18 points in the first half and took a 41-28 lead into intermission. The Bonnies, now 6-4 overall, went on a 19-8 run to open the second half, cutting the Tech lead to two points with 13:25 remaining in regulation. SBU kept the score close, but were never able to grab the lead from the Hokies.
Tech took a 65-62 with 25 seconds remaining on a free throw by Malcolm Delaney, but Ogo Adegboye hit a three-pointer from the top of the key with 20 seconds remaining in regulation to knot the game at 65-65. Delaney took a final shot for the Hokies, but it fell short and the game went into overtime.
In the extra session, the Hokies jumped out to a 68-65 lead one minute into overtime on a three-pointer from the corner by Manny Atkins. SBU twice cut the lead to two points, but the Hokies made two stops in the final seconds to claim the 76-68 victory.
Delaney led the Hokies with 19 points, while Jeff Allen added 18 points and nine rebounds and Erick Green scored 15 points and tied a career-high with five steals. In his three games as a starter this season, Green has 10 assists and no turnovers. Andrew Nicholson led four Bonnies in double figures with 21 points. Delaney moved past former teammate A.D. Vassallo into fifth place in career scoring at Virginia Tech in the victory.
The Hokies played the game with just eight scholarship players, as starting senior guard Dorenzo Hudson and reserve sophomore forward Cadarian Raines both were announced on Thursday to be out for the rest of the season with foot injuries. They join JT Thompson (ACL surgery) and Allan Chaney (viral inflammation of the heart) out for the season for the Hokies.
Tech will now take time off for the holidays, before returning to action on Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. against USC Upstate in Cassell Coliseum.
