Sung tabbed as head coach of UWLX's Baltimore Ride
Three former Hokies; Bartley, Macera and Loscalzo set to suit up for Ride this summer
June 1, 2018
BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech head coach John Sung is set to lead the Baltimore Ride of the United Women’s Lacrosse League (UWLX) in their pursuit of a first league title in 2018. The appointment comes on the heels of the Hokies’ most successful season in program history as Tech reset the record books en route to their first NCAA tournament appearance.
Sung, the winningest coach through two seasons at Tech, has ushered in a new era of lacrosse in the New River Valley, leading the program to seven ACC wins in the past two seasons, more than doubling the program’s output before his arrival. In addition, he owns two of the program’s three wins over top 10 opponents and guided Tech to its first ACC Championships victory, defeating Duke in the First Round.
The Hokies’ season ended in the middle of May in the Second Round of the NCAA Championships, Tech’s first time being included in the competition. In the opening round, the Hokies beat Georgetown 13-10 behind four goals from freshman Paige Petty, one of a record four Tech players to collect first-team All-ACC accolades.
The contingent of Hokies in Baltimore includes three former Virginia Tech student-athletes; Meg Bartley (2012-15), Meghan Macera (2013-16) and Kristine Loscalzo (2014-2017) who have all signed to play for the Ride.
Bartley is the program’s all-time leader in draw controls, corralling 285 during her time in Blacksburg. An attacker, she ranks ninth all-time in goals with 113.
Macera, who was a three-time ACC all-academic team member is fourth all-time in caused turnovers (80) and fifth in ground balls (129).
Loscalzo scored 100 career goals, including 57 her senior season, leading the Hokies to 11 wins for the first time since 1999 during the 2017 campaign. She was also an all-academic ACC selection.
