Hokies suffer 18-3 loss at Colorado

Colorado surged out a 9-0 lead in the first 20 minutes behind Darby Kiernan and Miranda Stinson and the Buffs would remain in control until the final whistle, defeating the Hokies 18-3 from Kittredge Field in Boulder, Colorado.

The loss drops the seventeenth-ranked Hokies to 4-3 on the season, ahead of their next contest, Wednesday afternoon at the University of Denver.

Tech struggled getting into an offensive rhythm all afternoon, recording just 15 attempts in the game, a season low. The Hokies also couldn’t take advantage of its free positions going 0 for 3.

Tristan McGinley tallied the lone goal in the first half, her 15th of the season and the senior came up with four draw controls on the afternoon.

Freshman Paige Petty scored the game’s final goal in the closing minutes, recording her 12th score of the season.

Julia Lisella in goal for the Buffs, had a stellar performance making 11 saves and preserving the team’s 12-game home winning streak.

Colorado, which advanced to 3-2 on the season had three players score five or more points. Kiernan tallied seven (two goals, five assists), Stinson had eight (five goals, three assists) and Carly Cox added five (four goals, one assist).

NEXT UP: Tech will matchup with the Denver Pioneers on Wednesday, March 7 at 2 p.m. The Hokies lead the all-time series 3-1, with the last meeting taking place in 2007.
