Two weeks from first draw, catch up with Coach Sung and the Hokies
January 26, 2018
Editor’s note: With two weeks before the start of the 2018 lacrosse season, we asked Coach Sung a few questions about the program and their preparation for Feb. 10.
How would you assess the state of the squad two weeks away from opening draw?
SUNG: “We are still building, that is probably the best thing, but we’ve got a long way to go. I think this new hard start date cuts out on our preparation time and as a coach we’re up against it, but we’ll get them ready. It’s just going to take a little bit of time.”
Have you seen anything special out of any players that you’re really excited about working with this season?
SUNG: “I think our seniors are playing great. I’m really excited for them. Tristan (McGinley) and Emma (Harden) are really strong on the attacking side and on our defensive side, Kelly (Glatthorn) and Meagh Graham have done a great job of being leaders and doing what we need them to do. Obviously we’re young, we’re going to have a lot of freshman play, so this is a hard time for them. This is their first preseason, they’ve never put their bodies through this and they didn’t realize the training they had to put their bodies through to get ready to start a Division I season.”
What are you most looking forward to about February and the start of the season?
SUNG: “Obviously it’s nice just to see us take the next step. More than anything I’m excited to build and keep building this program. I think that we have a great schedule in front of us and we have to take advantage of this opportunity that we have and I think February is going to show us a lot. Depending on how quickly we can get ready, and how quickly we can teach them and how quickly that the older kids can really become veterans and become pros, I think that’s really going to dictate our success.”
First draw for the Hokies will take place on Saturday, Feb. 10 from the Indoor Practice Facility against USC. The game is set for 12 p.m. and coverage will be available on ACC Network Extra.
