Tech travels to Virginia for regular season finale

BLACKSBURG- The No. 19 Virginia Tech lacrosse team travels to No. 16 Virginia on Saturday for an ACC contest. First draw is set for 1 p.m. from Klöckner Stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia. The game will be broadcast on the ACC Digital Network.
The Hokies (11-6, 2-4)
Tech has dropped four consecutive games, all in conference play down the stretch. Last time out on Saturday, the Hokies fell to No. 12 Notre Dame 13-9 on the road. Zan Biedenharn led five Hokies in the scoring column with her sixth hat trick of the season, taking her season tally to 31. Tristan McGinley and Marissa Davey each scored two of their own, but it was not enough to overcome the Irish’s strong second half performance. Meagh Graham once again played tremendous in goal, making a career-high 18 saves on the afternoon.
The Hokies enter the game with a 5-2 record in road contests in 2017.
The Cavaliers (9-7, 3-3)
In its last game, the Cavaliers defeated Louisville by a score 11-7. Maggie Jackson scored a hat trick while Kasey Behr, Avery Shoemaker and Sammy Mueller each contributed two goals of their own to help Virginia to its second consecutive victory. Rachel Vander Kolk made five saves in goal, earning her ninth win of the season.
On the season, Virginia averages 12.62 goals per game, the sixth best offense in the ACC. The defense allows 11.38 goals per contest, also the sixth best mark in the conference. Jackson is one of the best attackers scoring 3.62 points per game and leading the Virginia team with 58 points.
Virginia has a 6-3 record at Klöckner Stadium this season, and has never lost to the Hokies at home.
The Series
Virginia owns a 21-1 series lead against the Hokies all-time, including winning the last four contests. Last season in Blacksburg, the Cavaliers won 14-7. Kristine Loscalzo, Amanda Uliano and Colleen Ward combined to score all of Tech’s goals in a losing effort.
The Commonwealth Clash is a competition between Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia held annually pitting both school’s intercollegiate teams in head-to-head competition. The standings are currently tied at 9.0, with one point up for grabs from the lacrosse game Saturday afternoon.
Tech and the Cavaliers have played eight common opponents in 2017; Elon, JMU, William & Mary as well as the rest of the ACC. Virginia is 5-3 against those opponents, while Tech holds a 3-5 record.
Next up: Virginia Tech will play in the first round of the ACC Tournament on Thursday, April 27 from Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Virginia. Seeding, opponent and game time will be determined following the weekend’s results across the conference.
