Hokies upset No. 17 Boston College to open league play

Tech uses second half surge to earn first ACC victory

BLACKSBURG- The Virginia Tech lacrosse team defeated No. 17 Boston College on Saturday, earning the program’s first ACC win since 2013. Tristan McGinley and Kristine Loscalzo paced the Hokies with four goals apiece.

“It’s nice to finally win an ACC game,” said coach Sung. “We put a lot of work into building this team and this culture. I think today is the first step to seeing the many different things that can happen in this program and we are really excited.”

Virginia Tech took the lead through Loscalzo’s first goal at 23:59 in the first half. From there, Boston College used a 6-4 run to lead by a goal at the halftime interval. The Hokies came out of the break the aggressors. Tristan McGinley won 11 draw controls over the course of the game, giving Tech extra possessions. The team took advantage, scoring four goals in the first three and a half minutes of the second period.

“In the second half we opened up our playbook and really made adjustments,” said Sung. “That was the biggest thing, how we adjusted from an offensive standpoint. We scored 12 goals in the second half that’s crazy.”

Defensively, Meagh Graham had another solid afternoon coming up with nine saves. As a unit, the Hokies only allowed three assists from the Eagles, a big focus of the team this week. Brittney VanVeldhuisen had four groundballs in defense and Kelly Glatthorn grabbed four groundballs in addition to winning five draw controls

The Hokies dominated every statistical category, winning more draws, more groundballs, forcing more turnovers and outshooting the Eagles 41-25.

Boston College was led by four goals from Kate Weeks, and a three goal effort by Kaileen Hart. The goalies combined to make 13 saves. The team converted three of its five free position attempts.

The Eagles had a three goal run following a timeout in the second half to cut the Hokies’ advantage to one. In the final 15:57, Virginia Tech finished the game on a 6-1 run that included the game’s final four goals.

Six Hokies found the back of the net, each scoring at least twice.

The Hokies return to the field Wednesday for a game at Liberty. First draw is at 4 pm.
