The Hokies
Virginia Tech enters the game on a two-game winning streak, after opening the season with comfortable wins against Gardner-Webb and Davidson. Tristan McGinley has been clinical in front of the goal, scoring 10 goals and assisting on two more. She currently leads the ACC in goals-per-game with an average of five. As a team, the Hokies are averaging 17 goals per contest. The Hokies’ defense, anchored by goalie Meagh Graham, has only surrendered 14 goals so far this season.
The Dukes
JMU is 1-1 on the young season. They narrowly lost to defending national champion North Carolina in the season opener, before defeating Michigan on the road over the weekend. The Dukes are led up front by the dynamic duo of Kristen Gaudian and Margaret Tucker Fogarty. Gaudian has eight goals, while Fogarty is credited with six on the young season. Katie Kerrigan has facilitated the offense, dishing out a team-high six assists. JMU is led by Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe in her 11th year.
The series
The Hokies and Dukes have played each other 14 times before spanning back to the 2001 season, with the Dukes winning each time. In last season’s meeting in Harrisonburg, JMU defeated Tech by a score of 18-5. Five different Hokies found the net in that game. Coach John Sung has never faced JMU in his career.
Up next: The Hokies begin ACC play on Saturday at home against the Boston College Eagles. Start time is set for 11:30 a.m. at the Indoor Practice Facility.
