Hokies run past Wildcats, 13-7
McGinley's second straight five goal output fuels victory

BLACKSBURG- The Virginia Tech lacrosse team defeated Davidson, 13-7, Saturday afternoon and moved to 2-0 on the young season. Tristan McGinley scored five goals and won 11 draw controls to pace the Hokies.
McGinley has begun the season on a searing pace, with two five-goal games. She also has won 23 draw controls, most on the team. Saturday, she once again scored the game’s opening goal and kept up the pressure all afternoon.
“I think we came out very frantic with lots of quick turnovers, but as the game progressed, we saw more assists and more teamwork out there,” McGinley said. “Our defense did an awesome job today. They stopped the ball quick, and we were able to run it down the field and set up the attack.”
The Hokies went with the same defensive unit that allowed just five goals in the midweek clash with Gardner-Webb. Saturday they combined to cause 10 turnovers and also scooped up 14 ground balls, both season highs. Meagh Graham won her second consecutive game, only making two saves, but the senior captain also grabbed four groundballs and caused two turnovers.
Davidson kept the game close in the opening period, scoring with 3:47 left to make it a one goal game. From there, Virginia Tech went on a 7-0 run that stretched into both halves. During the run, five different Hokies found the back of the net, including Kendall Welch’s first goal of her career. Zan Biedenharn continued to facilitate the offense, dishing out three assists. She also added two goals for the Hokies, who are averaging 17 goals per contest. In the final minutes, Davidson scored three consecutive goals to cut into the deficit, but it was not enough.
One of coach Sung’s keys to the game was to win the hustle categories, something the team focused on. Virginia Tech once again cleared the ball successfully, a perfect 11-for-11. The Hokies outshot the Wildcats, won more groundballs and committed less turnovers.
Virginia Tech is back in action Wednesday, Feb. 15 for a clash with James Madison. Game time is set for 4 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the ACC Network.
