Hokies get set to face Wildcats Saturday afternoon

Sung looks to continue early season momentum

BLACKSBURG- The Virginia Tech lacrosse team plays host to the Davidson Wildcats on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will be contested in the Indoor Practice Facility. Admission is free.

The Hokies
Virginia Tech comes into the game after a midweek performance that saw the team score 21 goals in head coach John Sung’s debut victory. The Hokies were led by Tristan McGinley’s career-high six-point performance that included five goals and an assist. Virginia Tech controlled 21 of the game’s 26 draws and also cleared 100 percent of their opportunities. Kristine Loscalzo scored four goals, Marissa Davey added three and Taylor Caskey contributed two goals and two assists in her first career game for the Hokies. In the season opener, 25 Hokies saw playing time.

The Wildcats
Davidson opens the season in Blacksburg after being picked in the preseason to finish sixth in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Wildcats are led up front by two dangerous attackers, Christine Molinari and Annie Brockett. A season ago, the pair combined for 38 goals and 64 points. In goal will be the combination of Rose Woolson and Dana Stasieluk, who split time in 2016. Woolson compiled a 7-7 record while Stasieluk went 1-2. Coach Kim Wayne returns for her ninth season.

The series
Virginia Tech owns a 14-4 series lead versus Davidson. The Hokies are in the midst of an eight-game winning streak in the series which stretches back to the 2004 meeting. Last season, the Hokies won a tight game in Davidson, N.C., 9-8. Former Hokie Meghan Macera scored the game winning goal with 22 seconds remaining in the game.

Up next: Virginia Tech’s next game is a home contest on Wednesday, Feb. 15, against JMU at 4 p.m. The game will be the first of the season played at Thompson Field and will be broadcast on the ACC Digital Network.
