Hokies dominate in season opener
McGinley's career day sparks rout in Sung's debut

BLACKSBURG- The Virginia Tech lacrosse team defeated Gardner-Webb, 21-5, Wednesday afternoon. The Hokies led from start to finish, scoring the first goal inside 30 seconds. Tristan McGinley led the team with a career-high five goals, while also contributing an assist.
“I think the biggest thing about this game was that it was nice to play somebody else for a change," said coach John Sung. “It’s nice to open up with a win at home for our fans.”
Virginia Tech was relentless on the attack in the first half, scoring 16 times. In total, nine Hokies found the back of the net, and the 21 goals scored was the most since scoring the same amount in 2012 versus Presbyterian.
The Hokies controlled 80 percent of the draws, which set them up to be the aggressors. McGinley accounted for 12, while Kristine Loscalzo was responsible for four in the midfield.
Virginia Tech had 41 attempts in the game, 31 of which were on-goal.
“I think we did a pretty good job on the offensive side of getting to the goal and finishing," Sung said. “We shot almost 50 percent, which in the lacrosse game is pretty good. Obviously, we would like to shoot a little bit higher, but I am happy with that.”
Midway through the second period, the Hokies started to mix in younger players in the rotation. Taylor Caskey and Marissa Davey made significant contributions. Caskey had two goals and two assists in her Virginia Tech debut, while Davey poured in another three goals.
“We had a freshman really step up," Sung said. “Taylor Caskey really played awesome, putting numbers up on the stat sheet. When you see a freshman do something like that, it’s pretty impressive.”
Gardner-Webb was led by attacker Amanda Steinmuller, who scored two goals and registered an assist. Emma Rose scooped up three draw controls and two groundballs for the Bulldogs.
Meagh Graham registered the win in goal for the Hokies. She gave up just four goals in 50 minutes of action. It was the 12th victory of her career.
The Hokies will be back in the Indoor Facility on Saturday, Feb. 11 for a game against Davidson. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
