SPARKS, Md. – Virginia Tech senior Meghan Macera was named to the 2016-17 U.S. Women’s National Team’s tryout pool on Thursday. Macera and 104 other players will vie for a spot on the National Team August 5-7 at the US Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Maryland.
After the tryout period, approximately 36 players will advance to the U.S. team. From there, the players will train in preparation or the 2017 Federation of International Lacrosse Women’s World Cup in England. Only 18 players will move on to represent the U.S. as the team goes for a third-consecutive and eighth overall world title.
Macera graduated in May and was named to the All-ACC Academic Women’s Lacrosse Team for the third time in her career. Macera was also recently named to the VaSID All-State Second Team and was also selected for the IWLCA North-South All-Star game.
Macera started all 18 games for the Hokies this season and ranked second on the team with 28 goals while adding four assists. She finished second on the team with 32 total points. She also ranked 14th in the country and second in the ACC in caused turnovers per game at 2.18 and 48th in the nation and third in the ACC in ground balls per game at 2.41. Macera had a team-high 57 draw controls, 39 caused turnovers and 42 ground balls.
