BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech head coach John Sung announced Thursday the addition of Amanda Shimp to his staff as an assistant coach. Shimp joins the Hokies after working with Sung at Winthrop since October of 2011.
“I’m excited to add Amanda to our team at Virginia Tech,” Sung said. “She played an integral role in helping us build our program at Winthrop and I have the utmost confidence she’ll make a great impact at Virginia Tech. She’s passionate about lacrosse and helping our student-athletes excel. She knows how we want to teach the game and she understands the expectations we have for the Hokies. I’m thrilled she’s joining us in Hokie Nation.”
A 2009 graduate of The Ohio State University, Shimp was a four-year member of the varsity lacrosse team and earned American Lacrosse Conference All-Tournament honors in 2007 and 2008. She was a second-team all-conference selection in 2007.
Shimp earned a spot on the All-Big Ten Academic Team member in 2008 and was also honored on the American Lacrosse Conference Academic Team in 2007 and 2008. During her time with Sung at Winthrop, she helped the squad reach the NCAA Tournament in the program’s third season of competition, as the Eagles registered a 17-4 record in 2015, claiming both the Big South regular-season and tournament titles. In 2016, Winthrop went 20-3, again winning both the regular-season and Big South Tournament titles to advance to another NCAA Tournament berth.
The Endwell, New York native earned her master’s degree in sport administration from Louisville in 2011. While in Louisville, she served as assistant varsity and junior varsity lacrosse coach for two years at Du Pont Manual High School.
