BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech Director of Athletics Whit Babcock announced Tuesday that Megan Burker has stepped down as head women’s lacrosse coach. Burker, who earned her MBA from the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech in 2011, will transition into an administrative role with Tech Athletics as she completes the remainder of her appointment.
In making the announcement, Babcock indicated a national search for Burker’s replacement will begin immediately.
“I want to thank Megan for her contributions to our lacrosse program as head coach and in addition to her role as an assistant coach for four seasons,” Babcock said. “We appreciate her efforts working with our student-athletes who have competed in arguably the toughest and deepest conference for women’s lacrosse in the nation. We will thoroughly evaluate all the factors necessary for our program to become more competitive in the Atlantic Coast Conference.”
Babcock indicated no further public comments would be made relative to the women’s lacrosse program until a new head coach is announced.
“I’ll always be grateful for the opportunity to work with so many talented student-athletes, to build lifelong relationships and to represent Virginia Tech,” Burker said. “This time has been fulfilling beyond my expectations. My sincere thanks to the many wonderful Hokies who have joined me on this 10-year coaching journey.
“After a long weekend of introspection and careful consideration following a conversation with Whit, I knew it was time for me to embark on the next phase of my career,” Burker continued. “Pursuing a career in college athletics administration has long been a goal of mine. I’m excited about the opportunity to utilize both my MBA and my coaching experience in this new role. I look forward to making a positive impact on the lives of student-athletes while contributing to the success of athletics under Whit’s leadership at Virginia Tech.”
Burker recently completed her sixth season as head coach of the Hokies. She compiled a 46-58 overall record (2-34 in the ACC) during her tenure that began in 2006.
