BLACKSBURG - The eighth-seeded Virginia Tech lacrosse team fell to top-seed North Carolina in the quarterfinal round of the 2016 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Friday afternoon at Lane Stadium, 19-6.

Senior Jessi Thon and sophomore Tristan McGinley led the team with two goals apiece. Thon also had three draw controls while McGinley had two. Junior Colleen Ward assisted three of Tech’s six goals against third-ranked North Carolina.

The Tar Heels took a 3-0 lead with 23:20 left in in the first half before Amanda Uliano tallied the Hokies’ first goal. Colleen Ward assisted Uliano on the goal from behind the net to make it 3-1 with 22:36 left in the first half.

After two more Tar Heels goals to make it 5-1, Ward connected with Thon to make it 6-2 with 19:22 left in the first stanza. The Tar Heels would score six of the next seven goals. Tech’s goal during the stretch was unassisted from Thon.

The Tar Heels looked to take a 12-3 lead into the break but the Hokies gained some momentum and scored the final two goals of the half in the last 2:10 to make the score 12-5 in favor of UNC at the break.

North Carolina outscored the Hokies 7-1 in the second half as Macera added the only Hokies goal.

Hannah Sieger had eight saves on the day. The Hokies went 7-of-10 on clear attempts while UNC went 13-of-13. Tech limited the Tar Heels to just 2-of-10 from free position attempts. UNC outshot the Hokies 40-16 for the contest.

The Hokies wrapped up the season with a 5-13 overall record while the Tar Heels improved to 14-2 and play in semifinal on Friday.
