BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech lacrosse team played at home for the first time in over a month on Saturday afternoon and fell to No. 4 Syracuse, 19-5.

The game, marred by wind gusts in excess of 40 miles per hour and snow flurries, was the first game at Thompson Field for the Hokies after playing four-straight on the road. Syracuse was also the third-straight team Tech has played that has been ranked No. 6 or better.

Meghan Macera scored a team-high three goals for the Hokies while Tristan McGinley and Kristine Loscalzo each scored once. Hannah Sieger made a career-high 10 saves in the cage for Tech. Gracee Hendrix, Macera and Sieger each had three ground balls while Macera led the team with four draw controls and three caused turnovers.

For the game, Syracuse outshot Tech 37-16 but the Hokies only trailed in draw controls 13-12 against the team that ranks highest in the ACC in draw controls per game. Syracuse went 4-of-10 on free-positions while the Hokies went 0-of-3. The Hokies turned the ball over 19 times and Syracuse turned it over 14 times, both in large part due to wind conditions.

The Orange went up early and took a 5-0 lead with 13:36 left in the first half before the Hokies offense responded with back-to-back goals from Meghan Macera to cut the deficit to 5-2 with 11:02 left in the half. The Orange would increase their lead to 9-2 at halftime.

Syracuse only outshot the Hokies 16-8 in the first half and had a 16-11 advantage in ground balls and the teams tied 6-6 in draw controls.

The Orange scored the first two goals out of the break before Macera scored and made Syracuse’s lead 11-3. The Orange would score eight unanswered goals to increase the lead to 19-3 before Tech closed the game with two goals, one from McGinley and one from Loscalzo.

The Hokies will travel to Boston College to face the Eagles at 11:30 a.m., next Saturday.
