CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Virginia Tech lacrosse team closed its four-game road trip with a 15-6 loss at No. 3 North Carolina on Wednesday night.
Five Hokies scored as the team was led by Zan Biedenharn’s two goals. Meghan Macera had a team-high two assists to go along with a goal. Kristine Loscalzo, Gracee Hendrix and Jessi Thon each scored one goal. Hannah Sieger tied a career-high with eight saves in the cage, the fifth time she’s reached that mark this season.
The Tar Heels committed 18 turnovers while Tech had 22. The Hokies went 0-for-3 on free position attempts during the game. The Tar Heels outshot Tech 31-15 for the game with a 23-13 advantage in shots on goal.
The Hokies fall to 5-9 on the season and 0-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Tar Heels improved to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in the ACC.
UNC opened the game scoring the first four goals to take a 4-0 lead and eventually went up 10-1 with 1:26 remaining in the first half. Biedenharn added two goals in just 11 seconds with the help of two assists from Macera as Tech went down 10-3 at halftime.
Thon scored for the Hokies coming out of the break as Tech got within 10-4 with 24:18 left in the game. The Tar Heels responded by scoring four straight goals to increase their lead to 14-4 with 14:01 left. Tech attempted to build momentum with back-to-back goals to make it 14-6 with 8:56 left but the Tar Heels prevented the Hokies from scoring for the remainder of the contest.
The Hokies now have more than a week off before they return home to face No. 4 Syracuse at noon on April 9th at Thompson Field.
