LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Virginia Tech lacrosse team fell on the road to No. 6 Louisville on Saturday afternoon, 15-9.

After trailing 6-2 at halftime, the Hokies (5-8, 0-3) fought back closed the gap to 8-5 with 19:43 remaining in the second half. The Cardinals (11-1, 3-1) scored five straight goals to pull ahead 13-5 with 11:16 remaining. The Hokies outscored Louisville 4-2 down the stretch but were unable to overcome the deficit.

Jessi Thon had a career-high four goals to lead the Hokies along with three draw controls. Meghan Macera scored twice to go along with a team-high four draw controls with McGinley recording three.

Louisville had a 33-23 edge in total shots but only led 23-19 in shots on goal. The Hokies held an advantage in ground balls at 14-10 and draw controls 15-11, thanks in large part to the play of Tristan McGinley going up against Louisville’s Kaylin Morissette who ranked first in the nation in draw controls per game heading into the contest.

After Louisville went up 4-0 with 21:57 left in the first half, Jessi Thon responded quickly and scored to make it 4-1 with 21:16 left. The Hokies defense held Louisville’s offense scoreless for the next 11:29 but the Tech offense couldn’t take advantage. The Cardinals scored again with 9:47 left to break the temporary stalemate. The teams traded goals before Louisville took a 6-2 lead at halftime.

The Cardinals increased their lead to 7-2 to start the second half before Tech scored three of the next four goals. Thon scored twice and Amanda Uliano scored once and cut the Louisville lead to 8-5. The Hokies’ momentum was derailed as Louisville scored five straight goals to pull away for the victory.

Tech will now travel to face No. 3 North Carolina at 6 p.m. on Wednesday night.
