BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought game to No. 6 Notre Dame on Tuesday afternoon at Thompson Field, 19-10.
The Hokies only trailed the Fighting Irish 11-7 with 20:15 remaining in the game but Notre Dame gained the ensuing draw control and scored just seconds later. The Irish would then outscore the Hokies 5-0 in less than six minutes of play to go up 16-7 and ultimately hold off the Hokies.
Hannah Sieger made eight saves in the cage. Jessi Thon had two goals and one assist to go along with three draw controls and a ground ball. Gracee Hendrix also tied for a team-high with two goals on two shots. Meghan Macera, Kristine Loscalzo, Tara Feehan, Zan Biedenharn and Paige Murray each scored once for Tech.
The Hokies are now 5-5 on the season and 0-2 in ACC play. Notre Dame improves to 6-1 and 2-1 in the ACC.
Tech hung with Notre Dame after the Fighting Irish opened the scoring and tied the game at 1-1 after a Jessi Thon goal. Notre Dame would score two goals to take a 3-1 lead with 22:14 left in the first half. The Hokies did not back down and responded with goals from Gracee Hendrix and Biedenharn to tie it up 3-3 with 11:10 left in the first stanza.
Notre Dame pulled ahead on three straight goals during a span of 2:31 but Tristan McGinley and Hendrix were able to score two of the last three goals in the frame and Tech only trailed 7-5 at halftime.
Out of the break, Notre Dame pushed its lead to 10-5 until Tara Feehan scored a goal on a Jessi Thon assist to make it 10-6. The two teams would trade goals to make it 11-7 with just over 20 minutes remaining in the game before the Fighting Irish pulled away.
The Hokies went 10-of-13 on clear attempts on the day and 8-of-14 on free positions. Tech turned the ball over 25 times while Notre Dame turned the ball over 16 times.
The Fighting Irish had a 19-11 advantage in draw controls and a 27-17 edge in ground balls. Notre Dame also outshot Tech 39-13 for the contest.
The Hokies will travel to No. 17 Ohio State for a 12 p.m. contest on Sunday as they face the Buckeyes.
