BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech lacrosse team dropped its Atlantic Coast Conference opener to No. 15 Duke at Thompson Field on Saturday, 13-4.

The Hokies fell behind 6-0 in the first half but closed the deficit to 6-2 before heading into the break. The Blue Devils responded and scored six straight goals in the second stanza to go up 12-2 as they held off the Hokies.

Tech is now 5-4 overall on the season and 0-1 in ACC play. The Blue Devils improved to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in conference.

Zan Biedenharn, Meghan Macera, Kristine Loscalzo and Paige Murray each scored a goal for Tech. Loscalzo had a team-high four shots, all on frame. Kristen Kohles had a team-high five ground balls while Kelsey Allen had three. Macera led the team with three draw controls and three caused turnovers. Hannah Sieger made seven saves in goal.

The Blue Devils scored their first four goals in a span of just over six minutes to take a 4-0 lead. Both defenses would take over as the teams went scoreless over the next 16:20.

Duke scored two goals in a two-minute span before the Hokies responded with two goals of their own. Murray scored with 4:29 left in the half and Biedenharn added one with 2:32 remaining to make it 6-2 at the break.

Duke scored six unanswered goals to start the second half as well to increase their lead 12-2 but Tech would fight back with goals from Macera and Loscalzo to get within 12-4 before Duke scored the final goal of the game with 1:22 remaining.

The Hokies will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon as they host ACC foe and No. 5 Notre Dame at 3 p.m. at Thompson Field.
