NORFOLK, Va. - The Virginia Tech lacrosse team lost on Saturday afternoon at Old Dominion, 10-7.

The Hokies (5-3), who had won five of their previous six contests, scored all four of their goals in the first half off of free position attempts and trailed 6-4. Despite outshooting the Monarchs (3-0) 24-23 overall and 19-18 in shots on goal, Tech was unable to close the deficit in the second half.

Meghan Macera and Tristan McGinley led the Hokies as they each scored two goals while Kristine Loscalzo, Zan Biedenharn and Gracee Hendrix each scored once. Macera and Jessi Thon each had three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Hannah Sieger made eight saves in goal in the loss.

The Hokies were extremely successful on free positions on the afternoon as they converted 4-of-4 in the first stanza and went 5-of-7 for the game. Tech also went 14-of-15 on clear attempts. The two teams both had 15 draw controls and Old Dominion held a slight edge in ground balls at 15-14.

Tech scored first in the game as Tristan McGinley converted a free position attempt just over five minutes into the first half. Old Dominion would even the score as Megan Topper scored three minutes later to make it 1-1.

The Hokies would again take the lead on a Biedenharn free position goal. After the Hokies picked up a yellow card, ODU took advantage to score on a man-up situation and tie it at 2-2. The Hokies responded took on a goal from Hendrix to take a 3-2 lead but the Monarchs scored four straight goals to go up 6-3 and take the lead for good.

Tech would get some momentum heading into halftime as Loscalzo scored on a free position and trail 6-4 at the break. The Monarchs would score first in the second half as well as four of the first five goals and build a 10-5 lead with 14:19 left in regulation.

The Hokies would attempt to stage a comeback as McGinley and Macera would score to make it 10-7 with just under three minutes remaining but Tech would get no closer.

The Hokies will have a week off from competition before returning to action March 5 at 1 p.m. as they host their ACC opener against No. 10 Duke.
