BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech lacrosse team defeated Radford University on Wednesday afternoon, 17-2.
The game, played in the new Virginia Tech Indoor Practice Facility, was originally scheduled to be played at Radford but was moved due to weather.
The Hokies dominated the first half as they outshot the Highlanders 28-0. Tech led 6-0 less than 10 minutes into the contest and was able to take a 10-0 lead into halftime.
After gaining a running clock going into halftime, the Hokies continued to build their lead to 12-0 before Radford scored with 19:08 left in the second half. The Hokies would then score four straight goals, two each from Gracee Hendrix and Molly Soulé, to make it 16-1. The two teams would each score one more time before time expired.
Kristine Loscalzo scored a career-high five goals and has now scored nine goals in the last two games for the Hokies. Seven players scored in total for Tech and four players scored at least three goals
Hendrix scored three goals while Tristan McGinley scored three goals and added two assists and two ground balls. Soule scored her first collegiate goals as she added three to go along with an assist.
Jessi Thon, Kelly Glatthorn and Meghan Macera each scored a goal. Macera caused three turnovers, had five draw controls and three ground balls. Brittney VanVeldhuisen also caused three turnovers and had four draw controls.
As a team, Tech outshot Radford 43-4 overall and 33-3 in shots on goal. The Hokies also had an advantage in ground balls at 27-7 while going a perfect 10-of-10 on clear attempts. The Hokies only turned the ball over 12 times in the victory.
Tech and Radford both went 4-of-8 on free position attempts. Radford went 6-of-13 on clear attempts and turned the ball over 27 times. The Highlanders’ goalkeeper Hannah Rosen made 16 saves on the 43 shots she faced.
The Hokies will travel to Old Dominion for a 1 p.m. draw on Saturday.
