BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech lacrosse team will meet Radford Univeristy on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Virginia Tech Indoor Practice Facility. The game, originally schedule for 4 p.m. at Radford, was moved to Virginia Tech.
THE HOKIES
Virginia Tech is facing nearby in-state foe Radford for the first time in women’s lacrosse.
Tech is currently 3-0 against teams from the Big South this season as the Hokies beat Gardner-Webb 18-1, Liberty 7-4 and High Point 14-13 (OT). Radford is the fourth and final Big South opponent on Tech’s 2016 schedule.
The Hokies are coming off a thrilling overtime win over High Point on Sunday, 14-13. With the win, Tech has won four of its last five games. Against High Point, the Hokies trailed by as much as 11-6 with 25:55 left in regulation but Tech would score eight of the next nine goals, including the last three, to take the victory. Meghan Macera scored the game-winner just over a minute into the sudden-death overtime period.
Tristan McGinley leads the Hokies with 17 total points. She has 12 goals and also has five assists while Kristine Loscalzo is second on the team with 11 goals and two assists for 13 total points.
Tech is outshooting its opponents by an average of 21.7-18.8 per game and outscoring them by a narrow margin of 9.83-9.33.
THE HIGHLANDERS
The Radford women’s lacrosse program is currently playing in its inaugural season. The Hokies will be the Highlanders’ opponent in just their second game. Radford lost the program’s first game 23-8 at Saint Francis on Feb. 20.
Emma Rogers was named the Big South Freshman of the Week this week as she scored five goals and added an assist and a ground ball. Rogers’ five goals are the most by any player in the Big South so far this season in a single game.
Also in the loss at St. Francis, Juliette Ruland, Michaela Petersen and Avery Reding scored a goal for the Highlanders.
Ruland led RU in draw controls in the game with four and ground balls three.
Haley Marvine is at the helm of the Radford program and it is the second women’s lacrosse program she’s started. She also helped to get Transylvania University’s program off the ground and served as the head coach for two years. She was a goalkeeper at Cincinnati and team captain.
15 of the 18 players on the Radford roster are freshman. The other three players are a sophomore, junior and senior.
