BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team won its third straight game on Saturday afternoon as the Hokies beat Liberty 7-4 at the Virginia Tech Indoor Practice Facility.

The two teams were locked in a tight game with the Hokies leading just 2-0 at halftime but Tech (3-1) scored two goals in the first four minutes of the second half to push its lead to 4-0 and take control of the game.

Liberty (0-1), playing its season-opener, attempted to comeback as the Flames scored three of the next five goals to make it 6-3 but the three goal deficit would be as close as they would get. Meghan Macera put the game out of reach as she traveled 50 yards and scored unassisted with 9:43 left in regulation.

Jessi Thon led the Hokies as she had a team-high three goals and added an assist. Tristan McGinley had two goals and one assist to go along with three ground balls. Macera led a stingy Tech defense and caused a team-high seven turnovers and picked up eight ground balls. Hannah Sieger made six saves in the cage for Tech.

Tech outshot Liberty 24-15 overall and 17-10 on goal. The Hokies forced 26 Liberty turnovers and the Flames went 14-of-20 on clear attempts. Tech also had eight draw controls to the Flames five and went 18-of-21 on clear attempts.

The Hokies got the first goal of the game 2:38 into the contest as Thon scored but both teams would struggle to put points on the scoreboard until McGinley scored for Tech with just 1:19 left in the first half and give the Hokies a 2-0 halftime lead.

The Hokies had built a 6-1 lead with 18:23 left in the game but Liberty scored two goals in a seven-minute span to get back within three goals. Macera's goal with 9:43 left pushed Tech's lead to 7-3. Liberty would get one more goal with 7:38 remaining but Tech’s defense would hold the 7-4 lead for the remainder of the game.

Virginia Tech will travel to James Madison on Thursday afternoon for a 4 p.m. draw at University Park.
