DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Virginia Tech lacrosse team erased a five-goal first half deficit to complete a 9-8 comeback win at Davidson on Wednesday night.

The Hokies (2-1) trailed 8-7 with less than two minutes remaining before Meghan Macera scored back-to-back goals with the last one being the game-winner with just 22.4 seconds left in regulation.

Kristine Loscalzo led the Hokies with three goals scored and Jessi Thon, Tristan McGinley and Macera each scored two goals. Carly Primo, McGinley and Macera each picked up a team-high four ground balls while Macera also had a team-high three caused turnovers.

Davidson (0-1) opened the game by scoring the first five goals, taking just 8:40 of game time. The Hokies finally got on the scoreboard as Tristan McGinley scored with 15:36 left in the first half. Tech was then able to score two more goals in just over a two-minute span to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Davidson got a goal from Charlie Orner to temporarily push the Wildcats lead to 6-3 with 10 minutes left but the Hokies were able to close out the half on a strong note with goals from Loscalzo and Thon to trail just 6-5 going into the locker room.

Loscalzo scored to open the second stanza and tied the game 6-6 with 28:38 remaining in regulation. The two teams would get into a back-and-forth battle as they traded the next four goals. The Wildcats held an 8-7 lead with 8:10 left and the Hokies had a couple of long stretches of possession but came up empty until Macera scored off a free-position attempt with 1:36 left.

Tech took its first lead of the game and finished the comeback when Macera drove to the goal and scored unassisted from close range with 22.4 seconds remaining. Davidson gained the ensuing draw control but turned the ball over and the Hokies were able to hold on.

For the game, the Hokies went 12-of-12 on clear attempts and outshot Davidson 24-10 overall and 19-9 in shots on goal. Tech forced 17 Wildcats turnovers while the Hokies only had 10. Tech also had 24 ground balls to Davidson’s 12.

Tech will be back in action at 5 p.m. on Saturday and host Liberty at the new Virginia Tech Indoor Practice Facility.
