BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Virginia Tech lacrosse team went on the road and defeated Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon, 18-1.

Tech (1-1) jumped out to an early lead and scored a goal in the first minute for the second straight game. The Hokies continued to dominate the first half and built a big lead as they limited Gardner-Webb (0-1) to just three shots in the first half and had a 13-0 lead going into halftime.

The Hokies were led by Tristan McGinley scored a career-high four goals and added an assist. In total, nine Hokies scored during the game with seven of them scoring multiple goals. Hannah Sieger made five saves on six shots she faced.

In addition to McGinley, Jessi Thon, Amanda Uliano, Gracee Hendrix, Paige Murray, Meghan Macera, Kristine Loscalzo, Molly Soule and Zan Biedenharn all scored.

Tech outshot the Runnin’ Bulldogs 30-8 overall and 27-6 in shots on goal. The Hokies also had an edge in ground balls at 20-12, draw controls 14-7 and caused turnovers 13-6.

The Hokies were able to score five goals in the first 9:12 of the contest after McGinley opened the scoring 22 seconds into the game. Thon scored two goals while Biedenharn and Macera each scored to put Tech up 5-0. The next 8:30 of game play also resulted in five more goals and allowed for a running clock starting with 11:30 left in the game and lasted throughout.

The Hokies went 4-of-7 on free position attempts and 7-of-9 on clear attempts. Gardner-Webb had only one free position attempt and went 0-of-1 and went 7-of-15 on clear attempts.

Tech will play its second straight road contest at Davidson on Wednesday with a 6:30 p.m. draw.
