BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team staged a second-half comeback but ultimately fell to Navy 12-6 in the season-opener on Friday afternoon in the Virginia Tech Indoor Practice Facility.
Down 6-3 at halftime, the Hokies (0-1) scored three of the first four goals in the second half to cut the deficit to 7-6 with 25:42 remaining in the game. The Hokies held defensively until Morgan Young scored for Navy (1-0) to make it 8-6 with 19:53 left on the clock. Tech was unable to make up ground against the Midshipmen as Navy scored five goals, including one while the Hokies served time for a yellow card, in the final 20 minutes.
Kristine Loscalzo and Meghan Macera each scored two goals for the Hokies while Macera also recorded an assist for a team-high three points. Macera also led the team with five ground balls, five draw controls and three caused turnovers.
Jessi Thon scored a goal on three shot attempts and had three draw controls. Tristan McGinley scored the other goal for Tech and picked up two ground balls. Loscalzo had a team-high four shots including three on goal.
Tech got off to a fast start in the game as Macera took the opening draw control, sprinted down the field and beat Navy goalkeeper Ingrid Boyum with just 12 seconds having passed on the game clock. Navy scored three minutes later to tie the game but the Hokies’ Kristine Loscalzo scored just over a minute later to make it 2-1.
The Midshipmen would score five unanswered goals before Tech’s McGinley found the net with just nine seconds left in the first half to make it 6-3 going into the break.
Hannah Sieger made five saves in the cage for Tech as she faced 17 shots on goal from Navy. The Midshipmen held a 21-14 edge in total shots and a 22-17 advantage in ground balls. The Hokies caused 10 turnovers to Navy’s 13 while Navy fouled 29 times to Tech’s 22.
The matchup was a rematch of last season’s finale which the Midshipmen won, 19-11. It was just the second meeting between the two programs.
The Hokies will be back in action on Sunday at noon as they travel to Gardner-Webb to take on the Bulldogs.
