Hokies wrap up 2016 Fall Ball with 20th anniversary celebration
Tech welcomed back alumni to Blacksburg

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team wrapped up it’s 2015 fall ball schedule with its annual Orange vs. Maroon game as well as an alumni weekend celebrating the team’s 20th anniversary.

Tech faced 11 different opponents in a three-week span after kicking off their fall slate on Sept. 30 at High Point University.

To kickoff the 20th anniversary weekend on Friday Oct. 23, the squad held their annual Orange versus Maroon game. Team Orange was able to capture the victory in intra-squad scrimmage after jumping out to an early lead and holding off a second-half rally from team Maroon to take it 11-6. The game put a cap on a great fall season for the Hokies.

“Fall is a time to make mistakes and put yourselves in situations where you have challenges and have to overcome them and be ready to face that adversity in the spring,” head coach Megan Burker said. “We faced a lot of different types of opponents and I think we were able to really come through and get a better sense of what our identity is and how we’re going to play. I think that was great to see that come together.”

The Alumni weekend continued Saturday morning as the team hosted a tailgate prior to the Virginia Tech football game vs. Duke later that afternoon. A large group of lacrosse alumni dating back from the very beginnings of the program were able to make the return trip to Blacksburg for the celebration.

“We were really excited to be able to get a bigger group to come back and support the program and reengaged a lot of different age groups and graduating classes. It was fun to match up some women from the first women’s lacrosse team all the way back to alumni that just graduated after last season. It gave them a lot of perspective as to how our program has grown and where it came from. I think it’s always powerful to be able to look back and see who you’re representing. Women from the first team are excited about the current team and there’s already buzz about them coming back for the ACC tournament this spring,” Burker said.

The Hokies will now turn their focus on finishing out the fall semester well academically before kicking it into gearing as the spring 2016 season quickly approaches.

“This is the time they can get back in the grind mode with school and make sure they finish the fall semester strong. This is where we go back to the basics and tell them individually if they want to make a change in their game, this is the time they can focus on it. This is kind of a mental break we can take to recharge and get ready for spring,” Burker said.

The Hokies will be hosting the 2016 women’s ACC Women’s Lacrosse Championships for the first time in Lane Stadium.
