CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech lacrosse team fell in its regular season conference finale to No. 5 Virginia, 17-10, at Klöckner Stadium Friday evening. The Hokies turned it on in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome. Megan Will led the Hokies with five goals and an assist, getting her within three points of the all-time Tech record. Casey Bocklet paced the Cavaliers with six goals.

Tech (6-10, 0-7 ACC) kept things close in the opening minutes as Virginia (11-5, 4-3 ACC) struck first, but Will answered when she created an opportunity from the left side after getting the ball from Meg Bartley. The Cavaliers tacked on two more goals before the midway point in the first half to take a slight, 3-1 lead.

With just under 11 minutes left before halftime, Kasey Behr sparked a six-goal run for Virginia. Will broke up the scoring streak, after a few handoffs with Cawley Bromley she backed her defender in and fired one home over the goalie’s left shoulder.

Bocklet added her third of the game just before halftime, to give the Cavaliers a 10-2 lead at the break. Tech struggled on the draw in the first half, winning just two of the 13, and was outshot 23-8.

The Hokies came out with a new energy in the second half, winning the first four draws. Bartley won the opening draw and quickly fed it to Will for her third goal of the game. Virginia answered as Kelly Resse scored minutes later, but that didn’t stop the Hokies.

Bartley put away her first of the day after creating her own opportunity, but Virginia again answered to keep the difference the same. Will buried a shot from beyond the 8-meter less than a minute later, and Jessi Thon made it back-to-back scores for the Hokies when she put away the game’s first free position attempt to make it a 12-6 game in Virginia’s favor.

The Cavaliers strung together three-straight scores to regain the difference, but Tech continued to fight. Bromley tallied a late hat trick as she scored the Hokies’ final three goals of the game, including back-to-back scores in the last 16 seconds of play.

The Hokies were a completely different team in the second half, outshooting Virginia 18-10. They also turned the table on the draw, winning 12 of the 16.

Virginia’s leaders Courtney Sawn and Liza Blue tallied six and five points, respectively.

Despite the outcome, Tech goalie Meagh Graham played an aggressive game and came up big for the Hokies on multiple occasions. She made seven first-half saves and finished with nine in the game. Rachel Vander Kolk picked up the win for Virginia and made seven saves in the game, all coming in the second half.

The Hokies will return to Charlottesville for the first round of the ACC Tournament next week. The complete bracket will be released Sunday afternoon following the final regular season game of the year.
