BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech lacrosse team kept things close for the entire 60 minutes, but was never able to take the lead, eventually falling 13-11 to No. 3 Boston College at Thompson Field. The Hokies’ seniors came up big in their final home game, as Cawley Bromley and Megan Will led the way on the offensive end with five points apiece. Boston College was led by Kenzie Kent, who finished with three goals.

The Eagles (13-2, 5-2 ACC) struck first, putting two goals on the board in the first five minutes, but the Hokies (6-9, 0-6 ACC) responded with back-to-back goals in less than a minute. Jessi Thon buried a shot on a quick feed from Bromley to get things going for Tech, and Colleen Ward gave the game its first tie when she picked up her initial shot after it dinged off the post and put away the follow-up.

Boston College seemed to begin to pull away with a quick 3-1 run, but the Hokies hung around. Meg Bartley, who finished with three goals and an assist, backed her way in and made it a 5-4 game in the Eagles’ favor with just over ten minute remaining in the opening half. Just seven seconds later, Bartley won the draw and sent it straight down field to Bromley who was wide open for the score.

Bartley stuck again inside seven minutes to play when she shot low after getting a pass through traffic from Will to tie the game six-all. Mary Kate O’Neill broke the tie just before the break to give the Eagles the edge at the half. The evenly matched first half saw Boston College take a 14-13 shooting edge, while the Hokies had the 8-6 draws advantage.

Close play continued through most of the second half, as the two teams traded goals until there was under 12 minutes to play. Kent picked up a blocked shot and took advantage of everyone being out of place after the first attempt, and Sarah Mannelly gave the Eagles a three-goal lead, their largest of the day, at 13-10 with 8:32 left to play.

Will weaved her way through the Boston College defense after Bromley set up the opportunity, looking for a spark as time ticked down.

Goalie Meagh Graham was trying to add some defensive pressure away from the cage, but was able to recover and make a big stop for the Hokies with 5:15 remaining in the game, and get the ball back for Tech, but the Hokies were unable to strike again.

Graham finished the game with four saves, while Boston College goalie Zoe Ochoa also made four saves in the game.

The Hokies will return to action Friday, April 17 for a 6 p.m. game at nationally-ranked Virginia.
