BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech lacrosse team held on to pick up a 12-10 win over the William & Mary Tribe Sunday afternoon at Thompson Field. Meg Bartley had a big day, matching her career best with six goals in the game. She also finished with seven draws. Ellen Shaffrey and Abby Corkum paced the Tribe with three goals apiece.

Bartley got the Hokies (6-7) going early, scoring her first of the day on a pass from Cawley Bromley less than a minute into the game. Shannon T. Quinn quickly stole the momentum from Tech as she got William & Mary (4-6) on the board with an 8-meter goal and tacked on another when she was attacking across the middle two minutes later.

Bromley evened things back up with a goal of her own on a pass from Megan Will. Both teams added another score before the clock hit 20 minutes remaining in the first half to tie things up at three apiece. It was Bartley that broke the tie with her second of the game and Kristine Loscalzo bounced in another goal just inside the 8-meter line to help extend the lead. A pair of free positon goals from Bartley and Tristan McGinely rounded out what ended as a five-goal run for Tech, giving it a 7-3 lead around the midway point in the half.

Bartley upped her first-half scoring total to four goals when she fired from the left side over the goalie’s left shoulder to give the Hokies an 8-4 halftime lead. Tech outshot the Tribe 13-8 in the opening half, and won nine of the 13 possible draw controls.

Corkum struck first for William & Mary in the second half, but Bartley quickly responded when she buried a pass from Will who was behind the cage.

The Tribe continued to push, scoring back-to-back free positon goals and forcing a Tech timeout when they made it a 9-7 game with 18:20 remaining in the game.

The Hokies never let William & Mary get any closer than two goals for the remainder of the game, matching every goal they allowed. Bartley added her sixth and final goal of the game as William & Mary had its goalie out of the crease playing defense and the senior had an open look at the open cage. Will tacked on another for Tech in a similar situation, though the goalie for the Tribe got her stick on it and nearly got back in time for the save.

Tech finished the game with the 15-9 draws advantage as both teams took 21 shots in the game.

Meagh Graham picked up the win for Tech and finished with three saves. Meredith Crizer and Alex Lista both saw action in the game, but Crizer logged 55:36 and made four saves in the loss.

Tech will return to the field and resume conference play when it travels to Syracuse for a 10 a.m. game on Saturday, April 4.
