The Hokies continue conference play this week as they host No. 3 North Carolina on Wednesday evening. Tech will look to bounce back this week after droping a game to No. 10 Louisville over the weekend. The Hokies will round out the weekend hosting William & Mary on Sunday.
The Tar Heels enter the midweek game at 8-2 on the year, 1-1 in ACC action. North Carolina is coming off their only conference loss, falling to then-No. 3 Boston College 10-9 in overtime last weekend.
THE SERIES
The Hokies have never topped North Carolina through 19 previous meetings. The two teams have met three times in the post season, the last coming in the 2005 season. The Tar Heels took last year’s meeting 19-4 in Chapel Hill. The Tech and Carolina series began in 1996 and the two teams faced off in six straight seasons before becoming conference foes.This is the 12th all-time meeting in which North Carolina has been ranked in the top 3 in the nation.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hokies returned home last week after being on the road for two straight weeks. Tech fell to No. 10 Louisville, 15-6. Gracee Hendrix and Jessi Thon led the offense with two goals apiece in the first ever meeting with the Cards as ACC opponents.
Louisville began the game on a 6-0, and added a 5-0 scoring stinit to start the secnd half which would seal the game and create a distance too large to overcome.
HOKIES IN OVERTIME
Tech is 5-1 all-time in overtime games following the victory at Michigan. The Hokies are 2-0 in overtime under Head Coach Megan Burker, with the other win coming in 2012 when Tech knocked off then-No. 7 Virginia at home.
IT’S HERS TO SET
Meg Bartley became Tech’s all-time career draw controls leader after winning the opening draw of the second session of overtime in Tech’s win at Michigan. Bartley finished the game with six draws, and currently has 248 in her career. The Lewes, Delaware, native also holds the single-season record after propelling herself to 90 with a career-high 10 in the final game of the 2014 season.
RECORD WATCH
Megan Will is quickly climbing the all-time charts at Tech, chasing her cousin, Dawn Will, who sits atop the career goals and points lists. Megan currently ranks second with 154 career goals and 198 career points. She is also seventh all-time at Tech with 44 career assists.
Will is one of just three players to rank among the all-time top 10 in all three offensive categories (Allie Emala 08-11, Catherine Augustyn 96-99).
Meghan Macera recently joined Meg Bartley on the all-time draws list, as she has won 113 so far, good for seventh.
